Amarena cherries are the fruit of the Prunus cerasus tree which originated in Asia Minor and were brought to Italy by the Roman General Lucullus. The sour cherry is a variety of cherry with a tart, refreshing flavor. A summer fruit which is picked in July, high in vitamins A, B1, and C.
